Romans 2: 4 (NIV)
"Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?"
Goodness is one of the 9 fruit of the Spirit where there are personal characteristics that should be demonstrated in the life of every believer. No one can really teach you how to be good or how to exemplify goodness as it is a spiritual fruit that has to be grown and nurtured.
We hear lessons in church and bible study all of the time about how to be a good Christian, how to walk a good walk of faith but apart from God there is no goodness. In all of our shortcomings, in all of our unrighteousness, in all of our faults we need to hear about how good GOD is!
It's the goodness of God that leads us to repentance. Not our own goodness.
There is something about the goodness of God that makes a man, makes a woman want to do right.
His goodness makes us want to repent.
What does it mean to repent? The word teshuvah is from the Jewish language. It is translated to mean repentance which, in the Jewish language means turning back to God.
In Hebrew it means nacham, which means an emotion of regret.
So we understand that the goodness of God leads us back to Him. The goodness of God gives us an emotion of regret when we are not righteous.
This bible verse is basically telling us to not take God's kindness, His goodness for weakness ut let it lead us to repentance.
Let God's goodness turn us away from lying. Let it turn us away from backbiting. Let it turn us away from all things unholy.
And then....let your goodness draw others to Jesus Christ. We are living examples of the goodness of God and we should be living our lives in such a way that God is glorified and others are turning from their wicked ways and seeking His face.
Blessings and Breakthroughs,
